Post an original response to the discussion question by the end of Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. ET. This is worth 15 points. Posts need to be a minimum of two paragraphs of substance with appropriate citations to earn a grade of “C”. You can increase your grade with effort, including bringing in outside sources (using citations), offering new insights, etc.
You must state and support your opinions using information from lectures and chapter readings; more points are awarded for the more things you incorporate from lectures and the textbook and more points are awarded for originality. You are giving a personal opinion – there are no rights or wrong answers. Remember to exercise respect – a disrespectful posting or response to another student’s posting can earn you a zero for the week. Grammar and sentence structure are important and part of the grade.
When you are complete with the initial post, reply to at least one posting to your peers for this week's discussion board. Responses need to be a minimum of one paragraph of substance where you add to another student’s posting and/or clearly articulate (in a respectful manner) why you agree or disagree with the student’s opinion to earn a grade of “C”. You can increase your grade by responding (with substance) to multiple posts. Make sure your response is not simply a reiteration of your original post. Responses should be posted by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. ET. This is worth 10 points.
Discussion: Read the excerpt below from Levine, M., and Wallach, L. (2002). Psychological Problems, Social Issues, and Law. Boston, MA: Allyn and Bacon. Use the discussion board to post your response to the question Levine and Wallach pose:
A mentally ill patient who attacked someone because voices told him the man was trying to poison the city’s water supply is found NGRI. His delusions, paranoia, and auditory hallucinations are successfully treated with medication. He responds to psychotherapy aimed at helping him understand his illness and his need for medication, and at improving his ability to cope with stressful situations. He is released from the hospital, stops taking the medication, again has delusions and hears voices, and assaults someone.
If you were a jury member, what information would make you more or less likely to find him NGRI?
