There is a certain debate taking place in the media today. Â Last night Donald Trump gave his acceptance speech at the Republican national convention. Â In that speech he depicted the United States as plagued with violence and chaos--very much in line with the comments above. Â But then this morning President Obama and Democrat pundits made the point that statistically crime, even violent crime, is down; unemployment is relatively low; and the stock market is on a nice run. Â Typically these technical features of the political economy would make people feel secure and confident in the government. Â There is a disconnect that doesn't follow the historical pattern. Â Obviously, there are a good number of people in our class that certainly do not feel secure. Â If crime is in fact down, how can fear be so prevalent? Â How do we get such a disconnect?Â
