The solid propeller shaft on a ship extends outward from the hull. During operation at a certain speed, it experiences a torque of 60 kN.m. This causes a thrust of F = 1.23 MN on the shaft. If the shaft has a diameter of 250 mm, determine (a) the principal stresses on the surface of the shaft and show these on an element which is correctly oriented with respect to the shaft axis; and (b) the maximum in-plane shear stress and co-existing normal stress at any point located on the surface of the shaft and show these stresses on an element which is correctly oriented with respect to the axis of the shaft.
