1. While there is evidence that people have used contraceptive methods throughout human history, there are currently more options available than at any other time in human history.
   When different types of contraceptive and safer sex methods are tested in laboratory settings, there is no user error because the researchers control how the method is used. However, when a person uses the method outside of the laboratory, user error becomes a significant issue. This exercise asks you to research 4 different types of methods and explain why their actual effectiveness is (or is not) less effective when used outside of a laboratory setting. You will need to provide the effectiveness rates and provide a detailed description of how the methods fail (or if they do not fail, why not). You do not need to provide an overview of how the method works, and any overviews provided that are not directly related to the difference in effectiveness will not count towards your grade.
    These methods can be grouped into four categories: hormonal, barrier, spermicidal and behavioral.
   Select one method from each of these categories and use the Internet to research reasons why the “Typical Use” rate is the same or different from the “Perfect Use” rate. When selecting your sources, be sure to evaluate whether the source is reputable and medically accurate. In the exercise for this module, write the following:

   • For each of the methods you selected, list three points explaining the difference in “Typical Use” and “Perfect Use” rates.                                
   • Cite your sources in APA format and provide your criteria for determining that your sources are accurate and reliable.                              
   
   Example answer (Note, you cannot use male condom as one of your examples):
   One type of barrier method is a male condom. Male condoms are one of the most popular methods and when they are used perfectly, they are about 95% effective (which means that they will work as expected 95 times out of 100) (Hock, 2012). In actual use, they are 85% effective because when someone uses a condom, there are several ways that they can be used incorrectly: 1. using condoms that are expired (because they are less effective after the expiration date), 2. using condoms that have been exposed to heat (such as in a wallet or glove compartment) because long term exposure to body heat or high temperatures degrades latex, 3. not checking the package to make sure that there are no visible tears because tears in the condom will allow semen and germs through the barrier, 4. using teeth or other sharp objects to open the package because this rips the condom, 5. putting the condom on inside out which increases the likeliness of tearing, 6. not leaving enough room in the tip to accommodate ejaculate causing the condom to rupture at ejaculation, 7. using two condoms because latex on latex causes tearing (never double up!!!), 8. using oil based lubricant which degrades latex and creates holes, 9. the condom comes off during intercourse allowing ejaculate to come out or skin to skin contact exposure to germs, 10. the condom is not removed correctly after ejaculation allowing the ejaculate to "spill" (Hock, 2012). In a laboratory, each of these issues is controlled for, but due to a lack of education about how to properly use condoms, many people use them incorrectly. Even when used incorrectly, they are still 85% effective at preventing pregnancy. There is no known research about incorrect use resulting in higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (as it would be unethical to research this in a laboratory setting and cannot be tested in a real world setting).
