This study was done to test perinatal stress in adult male mandarin voles. During the last two weeks of pregnancy, half of the pregnant mothers were placed in stressful circumstances (being restrained 3 times a week). It was found that the now adult voles that were subjected to perinatal stress did not spend as much time in an open field and showed less locomotor skills. This was due to lower estradiol and testosterone blood serum levels, fewer androgen receptor neurons, and more estrogen receptor neurons. This study also found that the voles who were exposed to prenatal stress, but experienced some separation from the mother postnatally reduced anxiety and, essentially, reversed the effects of the perinatal stress.
