Erikson modified Freud’s theory and developed a psychosocial theory that focused on nonsexual crises or turning points that occur throughout the life span. The life long experience broken into stages does help us to see how long periods of development can be in his theory. Maturation is a long process in his view. What does Erikson say when one doesn't move smoothly through each stage?

 

BTW - Erikson's work has an artistic bent - his formal education was in art even though Anna Freud educated him on psychology.
