theory of the function of REM sleep

One the theory of the function of REM sleep is memory consolidation, which would mean that brain activity during REM causes long term potentiation (LTP).  Explain LTP and how it relates to learning and memory and how you think it relates to REM.  Your answer should include a discussion on the AMPA and NMDA receptors, and the physiological changes that occur during LTP.  Consider the relationship between short term and long term memory and how changes in the underlying circuitry might relate to the formation of the memory trace and remember that brain activity during REM is most similar to an awake activity pattern.
