A biopsy conFrmed the presence of a malignant tumor. Mrs. H. wasconcerned because her mother and an aunt had breast cancer. Nometastases were detected at this time. A mastectomy was performed and anumber of axillary and mediastinal lymph nodes were removed. Pathologicexamination showed several nodes from each area contained malignantcells. Given this case was considered to be stage III, it was recommendedthat Mrs. H. have chemotherapy and radiation treatment following surgeryand later have her ovaries removed to reduce her estrogen levels.Discussion Questions1.Discuss the di±erences between a malignant andbenign tumor and how they may be used indiagnosing the cancer.2.Discuss what other signs and symptoms Mrs. H.may expect to experience if the tumor returns.
