Why praise is such an effective reinforcer?

In our district, we have found that teacher that provide more praise to students, even those that misbehave at times, tend to have students that are more engaged in the classroom. We are currently in the process of collecting data by using a new observation method. Our goal is to collect data we can then present back to teachers. 

 

Why do you think praise is such an effective reinforcer? Are praise and other social reinforcers primary reinforcers? Do they stem from our inborn biological drive for social acceptance? Or would you classify them as secondary reinforcers?
