Warm-Up Activity 1.1: Can you tell someone’s race by looking at them?

Because your first introduction to someone usually occurs face-to-face, you tend to assess the individual based upon appearance. Warm-Up Activity 1.2: Project Implicit

Research indicates that we can harbor unconscious biases even though we might consciously work to reduce prejudicial behavior. Psychologists at Harvard, the University of Virginia, and the University of Washington created "Project Implicit" to develop Hidden Bias Tests — called Implicit Association Tests, or IATs, in the academic world — to measure unconscious bias. See what may be lingering in your psyche by taking a test located under your weekly resources: Project Implicit.

Assignment

For this task, begin by choosing three of the four following key figures in multicultural psychology:

  • Dr. Paul Pedersen
  • Dr. Mamie Clark
  • Dr. Carol Gilligan
  • Dr. Derald Sue

Next, imagine that you could gather them together for an interview, and ask them the following questions:

  1. What are your most important theoretical or research contributions to the field of multicultural psychology?
  2. How did your work influence the field of psychology, in general?
  3. What part of your work do you feel is left undone?
  4. What are the future directions for your theory or research? Add one additional question for each of the interviewees.

Submit a transcript of your interview as if each psychologist is addressing the question that you asked. Be sure to support the responses of each psychologist with at least one scholarly resource (per psychologist) published in a peer-reviewed journal. Appropriately cite the material you use, and include a list of sources at the end of the transcript.

Length: 5-7 pages

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University's Academic Integrity Policy.
