PSY 6102 Week 6 Assignment Prepare a Case Study Examining Cultural Identity

Instructions

Warm-Up Activity 6.1: Watch Video

Watch the following video located under your weekly resources:

Films Media Group. (2005). Segment 10: Beauty and Appearance: Increasing Acceptance of Difference - Living in the Hyphen: Cultural Identity in a Multiethnic Society

Warm-Up Activity 6.2: Measuring Assumptions and Self-Attitudes

The Twenty Statements Test (or TST) is an instrument used to measure self-concept. It was devised in 1954 by Manfred Kuhn and Thomas McPartland, with the aim of finding a standardized way to measure assumptions and self-attitudes.

This test is quite simple. Write down 20 different responses to the question, “Who am I?” Don’t worry about evaluating the logic or importance of your responses—just write the answers as they occur to you. Give yourself five minutes to complete this task.

When you finish, use your best judgment to rate each of your responses according to the four categories listed below:

  • A-mode responses are the type of physical characteristics; hair color, height, eye color, etc.
  • B-mode responses describe socially defined statuses usually associated with group membership of some sort: “I am a college student”; “I am a teacher”; I am an African American.”
  • C-mode responses describe styles of behavior or emotional states: “I am a happy person”; “I am a country music fan”; “I am a fashionable dresser.”
  • D-mode responses are more general than individual: “I am part of the universe”; “I am a human being.” Now compare the totals—which category got the most responses? Where did you note any cultural influences on your own self-identity?

Warm-Up Activity 6.3: How to write a case study

What is a case study?

Case studies are a way in which we can examine a specific situation or scenario in depth. They are commonly used in academics and in psychology, they are often used in clinical courses as a means to investigate a specific problem using the case involving just one individual.

Key points for writing an effective case study

Your assignment for this course provides you with a general overview the details you will need to address in your case study.

Once you know what you will need to cover in your case study, your next task will be to research what is known about the problem. It will be important to include accurate and current research to adequately support your analysis of the case as well as provide sufficient information to the reader.

Key elements of a case study

  1. Introduction
You will begin your case study by introducing the client. Be sure you provide a pseudonym for this individual and any other individuals you include in your narrative, whether the situation involves a real or fictional individual. The description of the client should include things like age, sex, occupation, relationships with family and friends, mental health history, substance abuse issues (if any), additional life challenges, and a summary of the individual’s coping skills.

  2. Detailed description of the issue or problem
    • Explain what the problem is
    • Explain who is affected by the problem
    • Explain when the problem may have begun
    • Explain why the problem may have begun

  3. Diagnosis
What diagnosis has been provided for the client? Note the DSM 5 diagnosis in your narrative. Share what possible symptoms, etc., the client may have. You may want to include additional research, statistics, and other pertinent details that further explain what is known about this diagnosis.

  4. Intervention
In this section you will present possible interventions that can be used to assist the client. It may be a theoretical approach or a mix of possible intervention strategies, for example. As part of your analysis, be sure to address any cultural and ethical concerns that need to be considered. You will also need to discuss possible barriers and other concerns, either real or anticipated, that could affect the intervention or treatment as well as the client’s response to treatment.

Assignment

For this task, you will write a case study in which you assess models of cultural identity. You will need to incorporate the following into your case study:

  • Select two different cultures other than your own.
  • Identify characteristics of each culture.
  • Describe how an individual may have his or her identify formed as a result of being a member in each of these cultures.
  • Identify what conflicts this individual may face.
  • • Describe how a culturally competent psychologist could assist this individual work.

Support your case study with at least two articles published in peer reviewed journals.

Length: 5-7 pages

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University's Academic Integrity Policy.
