Dear Reader...
After examining the qualities of both effective and ineffective readers, you probably have some idea of what kind of reader you are. If you haven't yet thought about it, then you will have the opportunity to do so now.
In a letter to your teacher, please describe what kind of reader you are and why you feel this way. You can use qualities that were described in the previous chart or you can even describe your own.
Before you write a letter, consider the following:
Is "reading" confined to just extracting the meaning from words on a page or is it something more? Do we "read" when we can tell by our best friend's eyes that her day is not going well? Do we "read" when we look at the sky to see if it will rain or not? Do we "read" when taking a peek into the oven to tell if the lasagna is finished baking or needs a little bit more time?
Before you label yourself as a good, bad, or average reader, consider what it means to read. Then ask yourself why you might be a really good reader in one arena, but not in another.
