Ability to Judge the Romantic Interest of Others

See the attachments

In 3-4 sentences, provide a summary of the study.

List each independent variable (hint: there are four), including the levels for each.

The researchers explain “the dependent measure was the observing participant’s perception of the interest within each speed dating interaction” (p. 23). This produced two ‘scores’ for each participant: a score indicating the observer’s accuracy in gaging the interest of the female dater, and a score indicating the observer’s accuracy in gaging the interest of the male dater.

For predicting male interest in females, the observer-sex IV did not have a significant effect on the participants’ score. In other words, were significant differences found between the mean scores for male observers and female observers: yes or no?

For predicting male interest in females, the relationship-status IV did have a significant effect on the participants’ overall score. Describe in one sentence the difference that was found between the mean scores for participants in relationships and those not in relationships.

For predicting male interest in females, the clip-length IV did not have a significant effect on the participants’ overall score. In other words, were significant differences found between the mean scores for male observers and female observers: yes or no?

For both predicting male interest in females, AND predicting female interest in males, the clip-location IV did have a significant effect on the participants’ overall score. In order to determine how the groups are different (i.e. which means were different from one another), additional post-hoc analyses were done to compare the mean score in each condition to the mean score in all other conditions (by the way: had there been only two conditions in this study, we could have used a t-test instead of an ANOVAJ). A post-hoc test involves comparing each of the groups in the study with each of the other groups to determine which ones differ significantly from each other. Many ANOVA post-hoc tests are simply a series of t-tests performed to compare each group to every other group.

According to the post-hoc results described in the article, in what condition(s) was accuracy the best?

The researchers offer their own explanation (page 25) for the differences in accuracy discussed in the question above. Summarize their explanation, or provide your own possible explanation for these accuracy differences at varying clip locations.

In experimental research, a confounding variable is an additional IV that is uncontrolled/unaccounted for the researchers that can affect the DV. In 2-3 sentences, describe at least one potential confounding variable in this study.

In 2-3 sentences, provide a possible reason for why the researchers used videotapes of German speed dates, when the observers were from the United States.

What pieces of information do you believe observers were using to make their judgments of romantic interest?

In what other contexts could researchers study the accuracy of interpreting nonverbal behavior? In 2-3 sentences, describe a study that could be done to investigate the accuracy of interpreting nonverbal behavior in a different context. A few ideas, in case you get stuck: job interviews, criminal interrogations, speaking with a boss/superior, doctors talking to patients about their health, etc.
