reports on a science or health topic

Find a news article that reports on a science or health topic and includes a CORRELATION (relation between two variables) as evidence for some claim.  You may have to look through a number of articles to find one that is well-suited for this assignment.

Your article should come from the popular press (e.g., the New York Times, NPR, etc.). Your article should not come from an academic source (e.g., a scientific or medical journal). Once you’ve selected an article, here's what you have to do:

  • First, list
  1. The article's headline
  2. The article's URL (web address)
  • Then, in full paragraphs
  1. State the claim being made (or implied) by the article
  2. State the CORRELATIONAL EVIDENCE presented in support of that claim
  3. Come up with at least 3 possible explanations for the evidence (1 of which can be the claim made by the article)
  4. Come up with an idea for an EXPERIMENT that could test one of those possible explanations and state which explanation you'd be testing. The experiment idea doesn't have to be practical or even ethical; it's just an idea! (Note: While the claim you found in the news article reported correlational data, this question asks you to design an experiment to test whether changes in one variable causes change in the other.)

TIP: When describing your experiment, identify

    • What your dependent and independent variables are
    • How your control and experimental groups may differ
    • What other measures you will take to ensure the experiment is well designed and why (e.g., how are you manipulating your independent variable, how are you assigning participants to the control and experimental groups, how are you accounting for confounding variables, and any other measures you think apply!)

The length of this paper should be about 2-3 pages, double spaced. Please answer each question in the order laid out above. Feel free to format your paper as a report or list. For example,

  1. The headline of the article is this:
  2. The article’s URL ishttp://writingassignment1.com
  3. And so on…
