redefining what White in America is

f someone has a African American mother and a White father, we assume the child to be African American. It is the same with any race/ethnic mixing with White. How did this labeling method come about and is it still useful today? Should we be redefining what White in America is? Or, does it even matter? Take, for instance, the example use on page 127 (Schaefer, 2012) of Mariah Carey who is Irish, African American, and Venezuelan. Do most people consider Carey African American? Would Carey experience criticism if she wanted to claim herself as Irish or Venezuelan instead? Is she considered mixed in popular media? Are there other famous people who live along a race/ethnic divide such as this?
