Should NPR even exist?

Should NPR even exist?" Some people make the argument that the United States Postal Service should be shutdown and private industry such as UPS and FedEx be allowed to handle the nation's mail delivery needs. The argument is that it is inefficient and outdated and that private industry could provide the service much better. Could the same not be said for NPR? At a time when there were much fewer media outlets, such an entity as NPR was a worthwhile public investment. However, in today's 24 hour news loop world that we find ourselves in, is there really a need for public investment in a news organization?
