Depression in Children and Adolescents Pretend student PSYC 302 http://www.med.umich.edu/depression/caph.htm This website provides insight into the incidence of depression in children (individuals under 18 years of age), symptoms, and methods of treatment. Rather than specifically define childhood depression, this website describes it as a disorder in which children display a series of symptoms relevant to a depressed state. Although the incidence of depression in children is about 5%, this website states that it most often occurs in adolescents, with females being twice as likely as males to develop it post- puberty. The risk of suicide becomes greater in adolescents and symptoms change as age increases. Whereas young children may show denial of their condition, and may cry without reason and/or show aggressive behaviors, adolescents tend to isolate themselves, lose interest in activities, and experience problems with appetite, sleep, and energy. The treatment for childhood depression mentioned includes psychotherapy and antidepressants. http://www.ncpamd.com/codepress.htm Like the previous website, the definition for childhood depression in this website is not specific and includes a wide range of characteristics that a child with depression may exhibit. While the incidence is not mentioned in terms of percentage, this website also concludes that adolescent girls are twice as likely as boys their age to develop this disorder. Some aspects of depression covered in this website that were not mentioned previously include causes, diagnosis, and consequences. Some consequences that were stated include relationship problems, substance abuse, suicide, etc. Methods of treatment were the same as those listed in the previous website and include psychotherapy and medication.
