Summary and Response Essay

Summary

In "Working at McDonald's," Amitai Etzioni argues that McDonalds is not good for people who is young. In the article, two-thirds of high school students have part time job which is relevant to food industry like McDonald's. The author claims that those young people especially in school students influenced by them and occurs poor school attendance and it leads poor academic work. Moreover, food chain industry offers very few skills that of help in their future life. McDonald's offers quite few opportunities for discipline and entrepreneur related activities. Based on author's argument, those food chain industry jobs are offering to do same thing all day and routinized jobs every place. The author's solution in this case is they should teach their employees "the fruits of labor", "self-discipline" and not to engage in similar activities every day. So that they can maintain values of the young generations without lower them. Teens should think carefully for their life balance which is more educational for themselves and parents also need to help them to pursue educational opportunities for kids to establish growing mature.

Response

After Reading Amitai Etzioni's article "Working at McDonald's" I disagree with his arguments. The author claims about food chain industry like McDonald's offers routine job every day without creativity in the work field and they offer few opportunities entrepreneur related activities.

To start with, McDonald's offers routine job with lack of creativity because McDonald's is doing business, no volunteer. The structure of the workplace and what is expected is already established at McDonald's. I'm sure that all food chain industry has their own manuals for a new employee or branch manager to train to know when the nuggets need to be made, size of nuggets, shapes, weight and so on. They don't need to be creativity because that is how the McDonald's business is operated. Some people may want to bored job and operating with manuals. There is always demand for those people who don't care about creativity even if lower demand in this field. It is simply company wants part-timer to do simple job for their company profit. Eventually, part time job would be easy so that every job seeker can maintain their job. This is how McDonald's is operating business and school students should know about this. The young people have options to choose where to work and they need to consider about aspects of part time job. The author also claims McDonald's offers few opportunities entrepreneur related activities. I think because it is what part time job is. As I said earlier, the company side wants their employees to operate through with the manuals, they don't have to authorize part-timer with heavy responsibility job in the work place.

Next, the author also claims that part time job which is relevant to food industry influence school student's academic work and their attendance in school. This is true that working hard during high school may results suffer from school grades. There are also social consequences, such as working during weekend. It is also negatively affect students because they may feel isolated from school friends or own family. I also think it is not worth to spend time for job during high school. Working during school is giving up too much things. This high school period is very important for their life. If students fall behind from school may results can't get into which he or she desired school. In my opinion, it is much more better spending time in class to acquire knowledge instead of learning useless things with low-income jobs.

In conclusion, each part time job has their business models and school students should know about the aspects of this. In addition, when they are working during school, they need to take account into their social consequences.
