women dominated traditional positions

Prior to the 21 st century, women dominated traditional positions within both their homes and in social settings. Women were to adhere to society’s expectations and carry out daily tasks such as sewing, cooking, cleaning, community planning, and in some circumstances manual labor – all aligning with their respective communities established and predetermined gender roles. However, advances in technology have since assisted in reforming expectations applied to men and women alike, thus changing a woman’s perception of her preconceived birthrights. In order to better explain how technology has transformed a woman’s perception of the world it is essential to understand society’s expectations of women prior to the late 20 th century. Before the coming of major technological advances – which coincidently and separately affected sociological changes, the majority of men and women had clearly defined roles within society. In order to understand these roles, one could observe the work of Eileen Power’s Medieval People, or more specifically her chapter entitled The Ménagier’s Wife – A Paris Housewife in the fourteenth century . Power’s provides an account of a “book of deportment” written by “The Ménagier de Paris … for the instruction of his young wife between 1392 and 1394.” 1 In his book, “The Ménagier de Paris” addresses his wife’s “religious and moral duties” and her duties “to her husband.” 2 The Ménagier guides his young wife on how "to be loving, humble, obedient, careful and thoughtful for his person.” 3 The aforementioned alone denotes the divide between men and women in alignment with society’s standards. The Ménagier’s book not only depicts the 1 Eileen Power, Medieval People (1924), 097, accessed September 25, 2017, http://www.gutenberg.org/files/13144/13144-h/13144-h.htm . 2 Ibid., 099. 3 Ibid., 099.

specific roles his wife must occupy but it also sheds light on a man’s place in a traditional world, especially since Power’s notes that his wife was “of higher birth than himself” 4 – suggesting that gender trumped class in regards to duty. In observing Disney’s Carousel of Progress – a show depicting the household impact of technological improvements throughout the 20 th century, 5 a conclusion can be drawn that The Ménagier’s view of a woman’s place during the Medieval times was consistent with society’s views in the 20 th century. The show entails a total of four scenes centered around a traditional family, with the first scene “set around 1900,” followed by the 1920’s, “1940’s,” and modern day. 6 The first three scenes coincide with traditional roles that women often occupy. The female head of the family was observed sewing, cleaning, and carrying out household chores that all required manual labor while the male head was sitting in his chair as he was leading a discussion and tending to his “company” 7 – a likely common occurrence. These observations, in conjunction with Power’s account of The Ménagier’s book, underline a prior woman’s view of this world as oppressive, or perhaps bias towards men (not to negate a current woman’s views). Each assist in bringing to light Homo Sapiens’ quote: “The sphere of woman is the home.” 8 4 Ibid., 097. 5 “Disney’s CAROUSEL OF PROGRESS Ultimate PANDAVISION Multi-Angle Edition – FULL SHOW,” YouTube, last modified August 7, 2013, accessed September 25, 2017, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmrSiJTMf7s . 6 “Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress,” Touring Plans, accessed September 25, 2017, https://touringplans.com/magic-kingdom/attractions/walt-disneys-carousel-of-progress . 7 Youtube, 08:15.
