To start off, I am very unfamiliar with white papers. I have never really heard of a white paper, let alone write one. This is going to be a challenging assignment, yet a good learning experience for me. When reading the example given, "How To create White Paper", it really puts emphasis on gaining affinity with your audience right away. It states that, "affinity is key" and that you should grab your reader's attention right away in the first paragraph. While this is important in any reading, I think the significance in the white paper writing is that you are supposed to be providing a service or product.Â
I am excited about the use of images and illustrations in a white paper. I like to be creative with the design of the paper and I personally think the touch of design adds to the overall content of the paper. However, like the article states, be careful when considering this. You do not want to use a clipart image you randomly found on google. It suggests to hire an illustrator, however with the degree at which we're producing this white paper, I think that just using our own intuition will be sufficient. It also suggests to use an editor to review the work. Grammar is very important in this style of writing because you want to sound reliable to your audience. Without the use of correct grammar, you are not setting a very professional tone. "How to create White Paper" compared writing a white paper to a journalist style of writing in that you should address the key questions in order to get across your point. Key points such as why your product will be beneficial and solve the problem that you are addressing. Another challenging aspect of creating this paper will be avoiding bias in our writing. It can be easy to accidentally incorporate bias into a paper that is listing solutions to an issue, so that is something that my group and I will need to be aware of.Â
After looking at the examples of white papers that are given, it is clear to see that the context has a big effect on the tone of your paper. For example, a marketing white paper is more persuasive, because they are trying to get you to buy into their product. In the example given by "Team AI Know All", it clearly lays out the issue of privacy that home technology can bring and lists the three solutions. They did a great job of giving us all the information that is required of us without being too persuasive.Â
Overall, the examples given are a little intimidating because it sets the standards high for writing our own white paper. It is clear that a very professional writing style and is expected of us. Like I said before, this will be a challenging assignment, however I think that being in groups is going to help a lot. It will be very beneficial to collaborate ideas and thoughts on different subjects and different styles of writing that each individuals' have.
