Annotation & Summary Assignment Directions For this assignment, you will choose one of the articles listed on the next page, then annotate and summarize it. Your summary must be at least 250 words in length , and you must have at least one parenthetical citation and a separate Works Cited page. 1. Choose an article from the list on page 2 of this document. 2. Annotate your article using the “Annotating a Text” handout, which can be found in the Module 7 Supplemental Material folder. If you do this properly, it takes some time. It may be helpful for you to print out a hard copy. 3. Write a summary using the instructions on the “How to Write a Summary (with Sample)” handout, which can also be found in the Module 7 Supplemental Material folder. Pay special attention to your word choice in this assignment. Note that a summary is not written by just moving words around, which you should learn in step 2. Use a thesaurus or www.thesaurus.com . Refer to the “Synonyms or Antonyms” and “Using a Thesaurus” documents included in the Module 7 Supplemental Material folder. 4. You will probably need to read “How to Write a Summary (with Sample)” at least two times before attempting to write your own. Notice that the handout includes prewriting techniques that will make your writing stronger. 5. Be sure your summary, parenthetical citation, and Works Cited page are all in MLA format. a. Your Works Cited page should be on its own page at the end of your document. All pages must include the MLA style page number. The heading with your name, your instructor’s name, the course name, and the date will only appear on the first page. You must write a title for your summary, as well, and include it on the first page, as usual. b. If you used a direct quotation in your document, you must put a parenthetical citation at the end of the quotation, as well as one at the end of your paragraph to indicate that all of the information in your summary came from that article. Remember, summaries do not include your opinion or information that is not included in the original article. c. If your entire summary is in your own words, you only need one parenthetical citation at the end of the document. Refer the Purdue OWL MLA Formatting and Style Guide for full instructions on both parenthetical citations and Works Cited pages. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ d. ASK if you have questions. MLA-style parenthetical citations and Works Cited entries follow very specific rules that you must follow EXACTLY in order to receive full credit. 6. Edit and proofread your document thoroughly.
