Disasters

Disaster can be defined as sudden event such as an accident or natural calamity. This cause distraction in normal living at a large scale. These disasters can be natural or man-made, Natural disasters such as tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquake while man-made disasters involve leakage of hazardous material, open forest fires triggered by man and many more. There are disaster management organizations working to reduce the risk of upcoming disaster. There is no country immune to disaster but some countries are prepared better. Man-made disasters are often caused by the negligence in the management of the hazardous material. Natural disasters are mostly due to change in weather such as tsunami and flooding or due to internal movement which includes earthquake and volcanic eruptions.

Mankind often cause disaster taking thousands of lives and doing major damage to the property and economy. These are due to extensive use or mishandling of hazardous substance. Let use the example of histories of the deadliest disaster which happened back in 1952 resulting in the death of 12,000 people and more the 15,000 people were hospitalized. This was caused due to extensive use of coal to provide heating for their houses. Dr. Renyu Zhang and his team answered this question through their experiment. As per their results, Nitrogen dioxide converts sulfur dioxide into the lethal sulfuric acid. This sulfuric acid caused suffocation killing 12,000 animals and thousands of un-documented animals. There was a similar kind of event happened in China due to extensive use of agricultural chemicals and traffic.Mankind is also responsible for climatic changes which ultimately becomes a cause for disaster.

Natural disasters occur due to sudden change in the climate or internal movement of earth. A natural disaster can cause mass loss of life and money, leave damaged economic system. The effect of natural disaster depends on the population effective by it and resources availability to overcome the loss. We can explain this better with the example of hurricane Katrina, scientists had advised that hurricane Katrine was power by increased global heat, there was estimated 8 percent increase in its power. If we consider the total rainfall of 305 millimeters than 25.4 millimeters was caused due to global warming. The other natural disaster due to mankind was Dust bowl. Dust bowl occurred due to continue farming of same crop for decades, during drought there was nothing to hold the soil. Dust storms effected hundreds of thousands form south to mid-west. Most of the people were forced to relocate. There is no compulsory that all disasters are due to mankind sometime nature has its extreme conditions towards mankind.

There are number of times when human kind suffered hard conditions from nature. We can clarify with the example of earthquake happened back on 23 January,1556. This is also known as 1556 Shaanxi earthquake or Huaxian earthquake. Almost 100 provisions in the Shaanxi area got effected with this earthquake. Some of these provisions lost 60% population in this catastrophic event. The damage done by the earthquake is impossible to measure. We are unable to avoid these disasters but however we can be prepared better for the upcoming disasters.

Disaster management organizations are trying to reduce the risk of disasters. There are 4 basic plans we can classified them as disaster prevention, preparation, relief & recovery. They focus on the prevention of the man-made disasters by improving the handling and storage of the hazardous material. They also work to prepare population for the future events such as earthquake. This can be prevented by making buildings considering the quality and type of land. After any disaster, they work for the relief and resettlement for the population.
