"The Raven"

Read "The Raven" (852), "Sonnet---To Science" (845), "Lenore" (846), "The Sleeper" (846), "The Bells" (857), "Annabel Lee" (860).

  • When most hear Poe's name, they think of his dark short stories about madness and murder. However, Poe's legacy is much more than those stories. He was an essayist, critic, and poet. I want you to read several of his poems so that you can see a different side of Poe.
  1. Discuss the shifts in the moods and mindset of the speaker in "The Raven."
  2.  How is Poe's "Sonnet― To Science" in the mainstream of the Romantic tradition?
  3. Edgar Allan Poe once wrote that "the death, then, of a beautiful woman, is, unquestionably, the most poetic topic in the world - and equally is it beyond doubt that the lips best suited for such topic are those of a bereaved lover". Consider how this statement informs "The Sleeper," "The Raven," "Annabel Lee."
  4. Choose one poem that you read this week that was not included in the previous questions and explicate it. Use the link found in this folder to learn how to write a explication.   Your explication should be brief, but complete.
