My professor gave a very brief and quick tutorial on how to break apart IPv4 addresses. He didn't use binary or anything. He said it was the simplest way to do it. He gave a set number of computers (for example: three departments, one had 64 machines, one had 19, and the third had 9). He said to put them in order and then using the initial IPv4 address given, you organize the number of machines by size from largest to smallest. and then you add two to the number of addresses needed because you need a broadcast and network address as well in that range. Then using the initial address provided, you break it down somehow (according to him it's obvious, but I'm lost...) and you get your address ranges. After you have the first one, you can just fill in the table (the bottom of the hand written note) for the next two and you're good to go? But I'm so confused as to how this works. He did two examples and then left the room. Any thoughts?
