Network Security will require advanced tools and skills in order to capture and evaluate network activity. The Wireshark Sniffer is the free industry- standard free tool, it is easy to download and install.

This ASSIGNMENT is intended for you to learn the tool and demonstrate an adequate level of skill utilizing the tool. You should use screen shots to show that you have accomplished this.

  1. Go to https://www.wireshark.org/ and download the tool from the internet and install it on a convenient machine.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the tool.
  3. Basic operation – turn on the "capture mode".
  4. Capture traffic based on internet activity that you have accomplished.
    • Browse Morgan.edu and move through several options.
    • Do email and Blackboard
  5. Stop the capture and review the data and identify activities that relate to browsing that you did in 4. Find IP, MAC addresses and port numbers associated with the activities
  6. Find examples of the following packet types and for each explain their function in the context of your activity in 4 :: HTTP, TCP, IP, Ethernet, ICPM, two others
  7. Demonstrate the filter activity for 2 functions
  8. Find a browser page and expand this to show the HTML code. Find the code that relates to an activity in 4
  9. Discuss why this tool would be useful for network security experts.
