ASSIGNMENT 3 SUBMIT VIA UBLEARNS ASSIGNMENTS YOUR NAME: YOUR CURRENT MAJOR: YOUR TARGET GRADUATION DATE: Most (60%+) of jobs are found through networking. This assignment is going to focus on helping you understand the importance of networking, plan your networking strategy, and practice some of the skills you will need to develop your network. STEP 1: READ: Successful Job Search Networking ( http://jobsearch.about.com/cs/networking/a/networking.htm ) STEP 2: Inventory Your Accomplishments: Include your educational background and work history (HINT: Session 1 Assignment) Accomplishments STEP 3: Develop Your Networking Goal: Think about how you could use networking to learn more about a prospective Feld or for job searching (as appropriate to your situation). What could your goal of networking be? STEP 4: The Elevator Speech Develop your own personal ‘elevator speech’. (A short talk about yourself that you could deliver during an elevator ride) Many networking opportunities and interviews start with a question like “Tell me about yourself.” As the article says, they really don’t want you to go back to grade school and talk about your childhood. This is a speciFc question with a right answer. Use your opportunity to ‘sell’ yourself in 30 seconds (2 minutes max.). Having a plan for this Frst impression helps you to relax and for the networking (or job, grad school, internship etc…) opportunity to go more smoothly. Your elevator speech should include: Your background, why you are interested in your Feld and why it is a good Ft for you (maybe mention your strengths from Assignment 2) and what your future goals are. Adopt this to your situation.
