Please discuss, and distinguish between, each of these sentencing options

What types of sentences should be imposed upon the guilty is often debated. The Constitution prohibits sentences that are determined to be "cruel and unusual" in nature, i.e. flogging, chopping off a hand, etc. So today punishments within our U.S. Criminal Justice System are more or less limited to imprisonment, parole, probation, intermediate sanctions, fines, restitution, and, in the most serious of crimes, capital punishment. Please discuss, and distinguish between, each of these sentencing options
