On this assignment students are required to review 3-4 different items located at All My Life for Sale. Select one item and search eBay to find an equal or similar item. Read 1-2 auctions and note the types of descriptions used.
Then, in a short response (3-4 paragraphs), compare and contrast the way the "AllMyLife" items were described with the way the eBay items you found were described. Specifically, discuss the following:
What type of description did you see: subjective, objective, or a combination of both? Provide examples.
How did each use visuals in shaping their descriptions?
What type of audience is each example trying to reach? Provide an example to support your ideas.
Which description would make you most want to buy the item and why?
Item 1:
I reviewed both eBay and ALL MY Life websites to compare and contrast how members described the items they were selling. The item I chose from eBay was a 55 inch LG Television, and the item I choose from All My Life was a Saori Hoshi's Television/VCR tag # 000003.
Sellers from both sites used subjective and objective descriptions. However, I believe eBay sellers used a higher percentage of objective description then All My Life. For example, eBay seller gave these objective statements: LG-Electronics-OLED55B7A-55-Inch-4K-Ultra-HD-Smart-OLED-TV-2017-Model, BRAND NEW FACTORY SEALED, unused, unopened, undamaged item in its original packaging. These are facts about the item that no one would dispute.
However, on ALL My Life, sellers used subjective statements by giving information on their experience with the TV. For example, the seller stated “she will be famous one day, I'm sure and this the TV/VCR that she used to do low-fi video editing on. This has been my main television for the last 10 years and everything still works. It’s kind of heavy, like TV's usually are.” In the first statement the seller is using their opinion of the owner becoming famous as a means of selling the TV. The seller is hoping a buyer would purchase this TV more as a souvenir. In the second statement the seller only describes the TV as being heavy, than excuse the description. This statement has absolutely no value to the buyer. Finally, the last statement indicates the buyer having the TV for 10 years. Most buyer would be very skeptical buying a TV that is 10 years old regardless of the fact that everything works. All three statement were rhetorical and subjective it was obvious that the seller was trying to persuade with entertaining and humorous statements rather than give pertinent information about the quality of the TV.
Nevertheless, both sites drew a different audience. On theEbaysite their audiences appeared to be more serious, mature, and knowing what they want buyers. I would shop Ebay because I feel more confident about getting what I’m paying for. They were lots more descriptive. On the ALL My Life site the audience may have being more young and nieve, these buyer make purchases out of their emotions as appose to making an intelligent decision based on facts given.
In conclusion, this project has helped me tremendously in how I shop when buying on the internet. I learned that buyers should pay close attention when reading ads. Buyers should pay close attention to rhetorical context, buyers should ask themselves what is the writer's subject, what is the writer's purpose, is the writer writing to entertain or inform and who the audience is. Buyers should look for site that will give them an objective description on the item they are purchasing .
