In the period of French Revolution, neoclassicism has reached its heyday. The antique world has gained a new great deal of inspiration in literature and art, with great attention to heroism and self sacrifice. Hero was interpreted as a citizen who devoted his life to country and nation. In this case the works of painter Jacques Louis David are very typical, who immortalized heroes of his time. Neoclassicism has excluded all unnecessary phenomena in artistic works, leaving only clarity and healthy intelligence. It is characterized by simplicity and restraint, unlike the Rococo style with which parallel in almost the same historic period and with which have always been controversies and disagreements.

In the field of literature, the spirit of heroism was highlighted. Emotionality was pushed in the background in every way, the most important were the manifestations of reason.
