Define Mitigating Circumstances and Aggravating Circumstances. How might these two issues sway a judge in his decision during sentencing?

Hello,

I know that Mitigating Circumstances are any circumstances accompanying the commission of a crime that may justify a lighter sentence. I also am aware that Aggravating Circumstances are any circumstances accompanying the commission of a crime that may justify a harsher sentence.

I'm not really sure how to answer the second part of the question. Can you please help me understand?
