Police Officers "moonlighting

 

Our author tells us that one of the fastest growing segments of law enforcement is the private police force. In addition, our author tells us that contributing to that private police force are many publicly employed police officers who "moonlight" for private forces. One of our last readings discusses police ethics.

Is it ethical for police agencies to allow their officers to be hired out to the highest bidder when those officers are not on duty? Please explain the arguments for and against police agencies allowing such a thing to occur.

Promoting and selling alcoholic beverages and cigarettes are, for example, behaviors that are legal but produce considerable social, health, and psychological problems. (Page 21 of 27, 21st Century Criminology: A Reference Handbook: Social Construct of Crime). What do you think about such a proposal?
