Set 115110 -- Fall 2015

Look up and and capture an image that shows the hard disk capacity (secondary memory) of your personal computer (it can be a laptop or a desktop). If you do not know how to do this you can browse the web to find out. Assuming you can use all the capacity to store movies, how many movies of size 6GB can you fit into it your hard disk? In order to make the calculations easier, you may round the hard disk capacity up/down to a power of 2. Note: If you do not have a personal computer you can let us know so that we can help you.

Sample Answers for Problem Set 115110 -- Fall 20151. (1 pt) Why is Jacquard's loom considered to be a milestone in the history ofcomputing?1.Jacquard's loom used punched cards to input the patterns to beweaved by the loom. If there was a hole in the card in a particularlocation, then a hook could pass through the card, grasp a thread, andraise it to allow a second thread to pass underneath. If there was nohole, then the hook could not pass through and the thread would passover the warp. The ability to input the patterns in this fashion isconsidered to be the first example of programmability in a device, andthe punch cards constitute the first known use of digital storage. The existence and absence of a hole can be interpreted as representingthe bits 1 and 0 respectively.(2 pts) Moore's Law states that the processing power of a computer doublesapproximately every 2 years. We can interpret "doubling of power" as "doubling ofthe number of transistors on a chip".a. According to Moore's Law, approximately how many transistors will a chipcontain 6 years from now? You can assume that a typical chip today contains 1billion transistors.b. How many years will it take to have a computer that is approximately athousand times more powerful than today's computer?2a. The number of transistors will double 6/2 =3 times over 6 years. If wehave 1 billion transistors on a chip now, we will have 1 * 2^3 = 8billion transistors 6 years from now.2b. 1 thousand is approximately 2^10. Since we assume that a computerbecomes twice as powerful every two years, then for it to become 2^10times more powerful it will take 10 periods of doubling in power, which is 10 * 2 = 20years.YearsTimes More Powerful224468816 = 2^41032 = 2^5......202^10 = approximately one thousandAnswer: 20 years
