The primary, secondary and tertiary prevention programs are very helpful but there are different areas of support and how they help. Primary prevention programs are the most general and for everyone in population in attempt to stop maltreatment before it even occur. They are meant to raise awareness to the general public, service providers, and decision- makers. Public service announcements that encourage positive parenting, playing a role in your child life, and certain parent education program as support groups are the main ones. The Secondary prevention is usually offered to high risk families. They usually have one or more high risk factors associating with child maltreatment such as poverty, parental substance abuse, young parental age, or child disabilities. These programs focus on teen parents, those within substance abuse treatment programs, parenting groups that help deal with everyday stress and responsibilities. They also have home visiting programs to check on them. Tertiary programs usually for when maltreatment has already occurred or indicated. This is used to seeking reducing the negative consequences of maltreatment. There are intensive preservation services with mental health counselors available 24 hours a day for them to contact as well as parent mentor programs of adult role models. Examples of the elder mistreatment prevention programs are another big concern. I learned by reading the book on page 185 that a group formed called triads. This is the local police and sheriff’s department agrees to work cooperatively with senior citizens to prevent the victimization of the elderly. The triads include representatives from agencies that serve older persons, such as agency, on aging, senior centers, and adult protective services. This is to prevent any abuse of the elderly. Many different types of abuse happen to the elderly; financial, neglect, psychological, and physical. For hate crimes there are prevention programs that educate people on different cultures. Maybe if people are more educated they will not have as much hate. The hate crimes usually have two components: objective evidence and bias motivation. There are hate crimes reports for varies of things: race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, disability…etc. I hope that as we go forward there will be even more programs to help prevent all abuse and maltreatment no matter what type it is.
