Dream Theories

Dream Theories

For today’s discussion I chose dream theories, although the person about whom I’m going to write is far from me, but his story is such strange and inexplicable, that it is memorable not only for me but for that individual and for many people.

A few years ago at a young age died his lovely wife. After her death, every night he was having strange dreams, nightmares. His dreams are continuous and still ongoing, every night after twelve. In his dreams his wife is coming to visit him. He sees tremendous light, hears scary screams. Besides his wife, even strange people with white, long clothing and mysterious faces. They talk with no human and unclear language. He never understands, when does the reality end and starts the nightmare. His dreams nor sweet, they cause pain and fear.

I want to present one of his dreams. According to him, he was watching TV at night as usual, he was alone. He looked at the clock and thought-it’s twelve, now they will come. And over and over again he couldn’t notice when fall in sleep. Again the great light, again white dressed people and deafening screams. This time his wife wasn’t with them. Strange people grasped his arms and head, causing him difficulty to move and even breath. He was screaming and asking for water and he felt how someone splashed water on his face. He jolted awake and found him all in cold sweat.

I think that his wife’s death has had great psychological depressing influence on him, and his dreams are the result of it. His life has become all about memories and grief of his wife, and these everyday thoughtscause of his nightmares. I think his dreams somehow are related with wish satisfaction theory. Obviously he was missing his wife and was living only with memories of her, and in order to fill her absence his brain was making this kind of dreams to satisfy his own wishes to feel his wife’s presence. “Dreams act as a safety valve, discharging feelings that cannot be expressed in public”.
