The Obama Administration supports the use of commercial unmanned aerial vehicles within the borders of the United States. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is an aircraft that is flown from a remote location via the use of radio controls. UAV's are used by public and private entities to conduct surveillance, reconnaissance, and military operations around the globe. These aircraft have the ability to carry armed missiles and others weapons for long-range distances. In the near future, legislation and an executive order will be released on the use of commercial drones used within the borders of the United States. The federal government has entrusted the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration ("NTIA") to coordinate the development of privacy guidelines for commercial drones. As time progresses the guidelines and legislation on the global use of UAV's will become ever-changing.

Please answer the following questions below in a one-page paper:

  • What congressional oversight exists in regards to the use of military and government (local and state) UAV's within the domestic borders of the United States?
  • Provide a background and synopsis on President Obama's support for developing legislation on commercial drones.
  • What guidelines will the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration ("NTIA") release?
  • How are local, state, and federal agencies using UAV's within the domestic borders of the United States currently? What are the future plans?
  • Do you believe that these types of weapons will be used by civilians to carry out WMD/CBRNE (chemical, biological, nuclear, or radiological) assaults or other related terrorist attacks?
