MANDATORY ARREST - DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

 

One of the topics within this presentation is "Zero Tolerance." In some jurisdictions there is a mandatory arrest policy when responding to domestic violence calls. This means that when responding police must arrest one or both of the domestic partners whether the victim wants it, whether there is evidence of abuse, or whether arrest is not what the officer believes should happen. 

 

The reason for mandatory arrest is because there are statistics that show victims often don't feel strong enough to pursue charges. Advocates for mandatory arrest say that mandatory arrest laws help reduce domestic violence for fear of being arrested.
