1.     Obtain background information, including age, country of origin, language and dialect of origin, number of years in the U.S., and citizenship status.
2.     At what age did the individual first begin learning English? Was this education in their country of origin or in the U.S.? Did native speakers of English teach them, or not?
3.     If your interviewee was in the U.S. school system, ask about their experience. Did they face negativity about their language and culture from teachers or peers, or did they have a positive experience?
4.     Are they bilingual or do they now exclusively only speak English? In what situations might they use their native language?Â
5.     Are they active in cultural activities in their culture? How much have they assimilated into mainstream American culture?
6.     Do they find that grammar or pronunciation is their biggest challenge in English?
7.     What mistakes in pronunciation are the biggest concern to them?
8.     Is there a time when they have felt discriminated against because of their accent? Ask for an example.
9.     If they could speak English just like a native speaker, would they want to? On the other hand, do they feel that losing their accent would cause a loss of their cultural identity?
