leave of absence

Scenario 2: You must take a leave of absence from either school or work. Make an email to your instructor or supervisor requesting the time needed and explaining the details of your request.

There are several requirements for this email:

  • It must have a pertinent subject line.
  • It should not be sent as an attachment.
  • It should be in block format.
  • It must have a formal salutation; use "Dear" and the person's last name followed by a colon.
  • It must be three paragraphs long:
  • An introduction that contains a purpose statement and some background information
  • A body that provides additional detail and support (e.g. for scenario #1, include the number of classes left to graduate, financial status, start date, other personal issues, etc. For scenario #2, include the dates you need off, how far in advance you're making the request, a plan for missed work, etc)
  • A conclusion that suggests a resolution, a willingness to meet, and contact information, such as your student i.d.
  • It should fit on one screen.
  • The e-mail must have a complimentary closing (use "Sincerely," or "Regards,") and be signed with your first and last name.
