Remember the 6th amendment guarantees the right to counsel.
Does the 'assigned counsel' system (public defenders) present an inherent conflict of interest since the public defenders are paid by the system that is trying to convict the defendant? Is this a problem, and if so, how should it change? Who should pay public defenders?  Remember the 6th amendment guarantees the right to counsel.
