General Question # 4: America's Massive Prison Population COLLAPSE

General Question # 4: America's Massive Prison PopulationCOLLAPSE

Lead in:  Read the sections on "America's Massive prison population".  There are many reasons for the massive prison population growth since the early 1980s.  A couple of reasons are; longer sentences for violent offenders and harsher penalties for illegal drug offenders.  To keep up with the prison population more prisons were built.  In recent years the cost of operating prisons had skyrocketed so state and federal governments reduced the number of prison builds which has caused prisons to become overcrowded.  Since 2011 prison populations have begun to slowly decrease as state and federal governments employ different methods to deal with the problems.  The state of California was ordered to reduce their prison population by the United States Supreme Court.  This 8 1/2 minute PBS Newshour video on California prison overcrowding gives some background.

General Question:  After reading the sections and viewing the video, share with the class how you feel about the massive prison population and what you think could be done to more effectively reduce the prison population.  However, perhaps you feel more prisons should be built and people should be employed to satisfy the demands of the massive population.  In any case respond with your views.
