After World War II, a number of international organizations were instituted to help promote world peace and prevent another war. One of the most notable from a political perspective is the United Nations. Less known are the organizations formed to help manage the global economic environment. Three of the most important are the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which set up the new global monetary system; the World Bank to help finance the repair of war damage; and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which evolved into the World Trade Organization (WTO) to manage global trade and tariffs.
