COMM 335 Module 3 Discussion 1 Kant’s Categorical Imperative for Honesty
The purpose of this discussion is to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of some important module concepts focused on honesty, tolerance, and cultural relativism. This activity aligns with module outcomes 1 and 2.
Answer one of the following discussion questions below.
1.   Philosopher Immanuel Kant believed that truth is absolute, and we should never lie to others under any circumstances. Even if you do not necessarily agree with Kant’s categorical imperative, explain why this concept of honesty should be an absolute rule in our communication with others.
2.   Even if you do not necessarily believe in deception under any circumstances, what are the conditions that may be acceptable to not tell the truth? Be certain to provide examples. Can one ethically avoid lying by ambiguous statement or withholding part of the truth?
3.   Provide a definition of tolerance and explain how it might help people avoid misunderstandings or conflicts among individuals of different beliefs. Give examples to illustrate your answers.
4.   Provide a definition of ethical relativism. How might the understanding of ethical relativism improve tolerance for people of various religious beliefs? Give examples to illustrate your answers.
