M4A1: Literature Review
In this activity you will develop a full proposal for the final research paper that includes a Review of Literature section focused on the ethical theories relevant to your topic. This activity aligns with module outcome 2.
In previous learning modules you selected a topic focusing on ethical communication and developed an annotated bibliography of at least ten sources to support your topic. In this activity you will write a complete literature review that includes a title page, an introduction to your topic, a discussion of the literature with citations for at least ten separate sources, and a reference list. You should consider your audience for the paper will be readers who have not had access to our textbook or any of the other resources in our course, so be mindful to provide definitions and examples that can provide context for your topic. Your literature review should be at least 1,000 words and follow the basic format below.
1. Provide a cover page that includes your title and your name.
2. On the next page, provide two or more introductory paragraphs that clearly identify your topic related to ethical communication. Direct your writing to an audience of readers who may know little about ethical theory or communication ethics. Explain the importance or relevance of this topic to you and to others. Conclude with a sentence or two about what you expect to gain from learning more about this topic in ethical communication.
3. Following your introductory paragraphs, begin a new section of the paper called Review of Literature. In this section you will be synthesizing information you gathered as part of your annotated bibliography assignment as well as any additional sources you have reviewed. Keep in mind that when you synthesize information, you will be writing about ten or more different sources from a holistic perspective.
Don’t simply copy and paste your annotations from the previous bibliography assignment. Instead, think about how you can group or organize your sources into points that they have in common. For example, you may have one or more sources that you relied on to define or illustrate the ethical theories you will be discussing. You may have a few sources that provide examples or illustrations of your specific ethical communication topic. You may have one or more sources that offer tips or practical advice or application about your ethical communication topic. As you examine your sources, group the information topically.
Provide parenthetical citations for all your information to direct the reader to the sources that should also appear on your reference list. A parenthetical citation usually comes at the end of a sentence and generally includes the last name of the author and date of publication. In your final paragraph within the Review of Literature section you should summarize the information you have learned from your sources to date and how it supports our understanding of your specific topic.
4. Following the Review of Literature section, you should begin a new section of the paper called References. In this section, you will be using the American Psychological Association (APA) style to format each of your sources. This means they will be presented in alphabetical order using a hanging indent. Additional details about APA resources are presented in the evaluation criteria for this assignment.
