DOC733R Doctoral Seminar III Week 1 Pre-Residency Assignment

DOC733R Doctoral Seminar III Week 1 Pre-Residency Assignment

Assignment Preparation:

Read the following articles located in the course Electronic Reserve Readings:

·         Kasworm, C. E., & Abdrahim, N. B. (2014). Scholarship of engagement and engaged scholars: Through the eyes of exemplars. Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement, 18(2), 121-148.

·         Ku, K. Y., & Ho, I. T., (2010). Metacognitive strategies that enhance critical thinking. Metacognition Learning 5(3), 251-267. doi:10.1007/s11409-010-9060-6

·         You are only required to read pp. 251-254--there is no need to read past the section titled, "Metacognition and critical thinking."

Assignment Part I:

Purpose:

This assignment is designed to help you gain perspective on your influence as a scholar-practitioner-leader in your discipline.

Scenario:

Imagine that a respected colleague has asked you for a professional letter of recommendation for a new position he or she wishes to pursue. Now imagine that instead of writing this professional letter of recommendation about your colleague, you are writing it about yourself.

Instructions:

Write a 350- to 700-word professional letter of recommendation for yourself using the third person perspective. Your letter of recommendation should highlight notable achievements and skills within your discipline and include specific examples to evidence each assertion. Consider your role as a scholar-practitioner-leader when brainstorming your content.

Assignment Part II:

Read the article titled, "Scholarship of Engagement and Engaged Scholars: Through the Eyes of Exemplars," located in the course Electronic Reserve Readings.

Search the peer-reviewed, scholarly literature for additional articles specific to the topic: Scholarship of Engagement.

Read through the various articles to gain a broad understanding of the differing conceptions and definitions associated with the Scholarship of Engagement.

Reflect upon the Scholarship of Engagement construct and consider its purpose and relevance to your role as a doctorally prepared scholar-practitioner-leader.

Compose a definition for the Scholarship of Engagement that represents your current understanding and positionality as a doctoral student and professional in your discipline. The purpose of this assignment is not to cite or paraphrase peer-reviewed sources. Rather, your definition should be written in your own words and represent your personal understanding.

Submit assignment parts I and II as a single document by 8:00 a.m. (Arizona time) on Day 1 of residency.
