MM 250 Unit 6 Discussion Topic Linear Population Growth

Do you know what the U.S. population is at this exact moment? The U.S. Census Bureau runs a virtual population clock online that shows an estimate of the U.S. population. This clock is an estimate based on three components: (1) the average frequency of births, (2) the average frequency of deaths, and (3) the average frequency of international net migration into the United States. Averaging these three variables will give the frequency of increase/decrease in population. (As of September, 2016, the U.S. population will gain a person approximately every 11 seconds.) The three components to this model are reevaluated every month. This is obviously an estimate as one can recognize that the U.S. population varies nonlinearly throughout the month. You can generically model this type of linear population growth by an arithmetic sequence defined by the general term of:

Pn = P(n-1) + d where d is the average frequency of population increase (or decrease)

n = natural number indicating the nth growth period

P0 = initial population size

Initial Post: Create your own population growth model word problem for a classmate to solve.

1) Describe your population growth scenario in at least two paragraphs to give context for the math problem. For example, it could be the change in the prairie dog population each month in the open space across from your house or it could be the population size of infected people during the spread of an infectious disease.

2) Explicitly state your population growth model and include the following:

·         Initial population size, P0

·         Population size after one growth period, P1 (i.e., days, months, or years)

·         Average change between growth periods, d

·         Growth model equation of the form Pn = P(n-1) + d

First Response to a Classmate: Review a classmate’s growth model scenario and equation. If no other classmate has yet responded, write out the first 10 terms of the sequence and describe the change in population from P0 to P10 in (at least) one well-composed paragraph.

Second Response to a Classmate: Review a different classmate’s growth model scenario and equation. Consider what the population would be at a different growth period. Select a different growth period (value of n greater than 10) and describe the change in population in (at least) one well composed paragraph.

Discussion Requirements

Throughout this course, you will respond to other people’s opinions and comments by participating in the Discussion Boards. It is helpful to complete your Reading prior to answering the Discussion topics.

The complete Discussion topics can be found by clicking on the Discussion content item in the menu to the left under this unit. Be sure to answer one of the provided questions, comment on at least two of your classmates' posts, and engage one another in discussion.

Discussion Board grading rubrics include points for posts which “…contribute to the quality of the discussion.” In order to earn full credit, students are strongly encouraged to post by Saturday night so that posts will engage other students and provide a quality contribution. Be sure your post is grammatically correct, has been spell checked, and you have fully answered the question. A response to a classmates’ post must be substantive; posts such as “Great job” or “I agree” will not be counted as a response. See the rubric for further details. Provide citations for any websites referred to in your posts and summarize in your own words any information shared in your post.
