MM 250 Unit 10 Discussion Topic Applications of Algorithms and Transition Diagrams

Initial Post: Complete both parts of the Discussion.

Part 1: Algorithms

Write an algorithm for an action that you perform each day — something with multiple steps and which requires you to make decisions. For example, putting snow tires on your car or tidying up the house for a visit from your mother-in-law. Your algorithm must have at least one conditional operation, one iterative operation, and one sequential operation.

Part 2: Transition Diagrams

How can transition diagrams help you to write or design a better program, application, or system? Identify an example scenario in which a state transition diagram might come in handy. Be sure to identify at least three states and three transitions in your scenario and the probabilities associated with each transition. You may use the software of your choice for the drawing. A few online options are creatly.com or cosketch.com. Also, Paint, Word, or PPT work and can be saved as an image or file. Share the image as an attachment or as a link.

First Response to a Classmate: Review a classmate’s algorithm and describe the following characteristics of the algorithm: input, output, efficiency, time, and scalability. Further the math conversation by discussing the connections between algorithms, graphs, and trees.

Second Response to a Classmate: Review a classmate’s transition diagram and describe the states and transitions to their diagram. Further the math conversation by discussing the connections between transitional diagrams, probability, and matrices. Describe the probability matrix associated with the transition diagram.

Discussion Requirements

Throughout this course, you will respond to other people’s opinions and comments by participating in the Discussion Boards. It is helpful to complete your Reading prior to answering the Discussion topics.

The complete Discussion topics can be found by clicking on the Discussion content item in the menu to the left under this unit. Be sure to answer one of the provided questions, comment on at least two of your classmates' posts, and engage one another in discussion.

Discussion Board grading rubrics include points for posts which “…contribute to the quality of the discussion.” In order to earn full credit, students are strongly encouraged to post by Saturday night so that posts will engage other students and provide a quality contribution. Be sure your post is grammatically correct, has been spell checked, and you have fully answered the question. A response to a classmates’ post must be substantive; posts such as “Great job” or “I agree” will not be counted as a response. See the rubric for further details. Provide citations for any websites referred to in your posts and summarize in your own words any information shared in your post.
