MM 250 Unit 5 Seminar

Attending live Seminars is important to your academic success, and attendance is highly recommended. The Seminar allows you to review the important concepts presented in each unit, discuss work issues in your lives that pertain to these concepts, ask your instructor questions, and allow you to come together in real time with your fellow classmates.

Option 1: Participate in the live Seminar

Complete the unit Reading before attending the Seminar session so that you are familiar with the necessary terminology and concepts.

Topics for the Unit 5 Seminar include:

  • Set notation.
  • Definitions of subsets and proper subsets.
  • Relationships of sets.
  • Logical operations of sets.
  • Expressing sets with Venn diagrams.

Option 2: Alternative Assignment:

You will benefit most from attending the graded Seminar as an active participant. However, if you are unable to attend, you have the opportunity to make up the points by completing the alternative assignment.

The Seminar Option 2 is a writing Assignment based on content from the unit. The Assignment should be prepared using Word and be at least two paragraphs in length (12 point, double spaced). The paper should follow APA format and be grammatically correct.

Seminar Alternative Assignment Topic:

To find out what elective physical education courses college students were taking, a survey was taken about three courses: golf, Pilates, and tennis. The following was found:

45 students were enrolled in golf (G)

55 students were enrolled in Pilates (P)

40 students were enrolled in tennis (T)

12 students were enrolled in both golf and Pilates (G ∩ P)

15 students were enrolled in both golf and tennis (G ∩ T)

23 students were enrolled in both Pilates and tennis (P ∩ T)

2 students were enrolled in all the courses (G ∩ P ∩ T)

32 students were not enrolled in any of the course (G ∪ P ∪ T)'

How many students were surveyed (i.e., how many elements are in the universal set U)? Explain the logic used to arrive at the solution. You may use a Venn diagram in this explanation. You may use the software of your choice for the Venn diagram. A few online options are creatly.com or cosketch.com. Also, Paint, Word, or PPT also work and can be saved as an image or file. Share the image as an attachment or as a link.

Submit your completed Seminar alternative assignment using the appropriate selection in the course Dropbox.
