HIS 104 Week 4 Discussion

There were many issues and events that led to the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution.

Please choose ONE of the following questions (some questions have more than 1 part).  Respond in a minimum of 250 words and cite your sources.  Remember to respond to at least one other person before the week is over.   When possible, respond to someone who chose a different question than you did.

Be sure to:

·         Make a robust reply to demonstrate understanding of the topic (approx. 200 words or more)

·         Cite the sources you use to help you answer the question

·         Answer in your own words and identify any phrases copied from a source by placing them in quotation marks and citing (should only be a small portion of your reply - majority should be in your own words)

·         Reply to at least one other person in the thread with a substantive comment that demonstrates your own knowledge of the topic and moves the discussion forward.  Strive to go above and beyond and respond to even more!

·         Try to post earlier in the week so that we can all have a good discussion throughout the week

Questions to Choose From

1.      Think about the acts passed by the British that we studied this week.  If you were living in England at the time, how would you have defended these acts?  If you were living in the colonies, how would your view of the acts be different?  (think specifically about all the taxes and the Coercive Acts)

2.      Read Common Sense by Thomas Paine (found in the supplemental reading section of the Webtext AND in the instructor insights).  What was Common Sense?  What views and actions did Paine support and/or promote (give examples)?  What role did Common Sense play in the American Revolution?

3.      Discuss the roles of the First and Second Continental Congress in the events leading up to the American Revolution.  What was the goal for each one?  What was the outcome?  If you had been a delegate to these conventions, what action would you have most likely supported or proposed?

4.      Do you think Britain could have done anything differently in these years leading up to the American Revolution to avoid a revolution all together?  Or was it inevitable?  Provide specific examples and support your assertions.
