Discussion is an important part of the learning experience. In traditional classroom settings, there are multiple opportunities for student interaction. In this on-line course, we will use discussion threads in Blackboard as one method of student interaction.
During the course, there will be a discussion board forum during weeks one through four. All discussion threads open on the first day of the week. Initial posts are due no later than Thursday of each week, 11:59 pm. Respond to at least one colleague to every discussion prompt no later than the last day of each week, 11:59 pm. Refer to the Course Assignment Schedule for due dates of the threads. While a student can participate in the discussion earlier than the due date, deadlines for when discussion posts are due are firm and non-negotiable. In other words, discussion board posts are not accepted after the deadline/due date. Please note that you must first post your initial discussion post before you have access to see the posts of your peers and make responses.
To receive full credit, students must complete all components of each discussion assignment.
·        For EVERY discussion, students are to read the instructions and then initiate discussion by posting a substantive comment regarding each discussion prompt. Refer to the rubric for details.
·        In addition, students will respond to at least one colleague to each discussion prompt.

Prompt 1: What's in a Name - Let's Get to Know Each Other
Initial Post:

§ How do you experience your name?
§ How do you think others experience your name?
o   Other information
§ Include brief academic background and where you are from.
§ What is your current job (i.e., 9th grade English teacher)?
§ What do you hope to gain from this course?
§ What are your interests outside of graduate school?
o   OPTIONAL. From a professor's perspective, it's always nice to put a face with a name. Consider attaching a picture of yourself. The photo should be of YOU alone, not with a family member or friend, a pet, or of you playing a sport or exercising, fishing, hunting, etc.

Prompt 2: Shifting Demographics and Cultural Perspectives
Why is it important that educators understand and respect cultural perspectives, the changing demographic landscape of American's education system? What is wrong with teachers stating, "I don't see the color of my students." For this discussion prompt, reflect on this week's readings, lecture, videos, as well as your personal perspectives.
