IT 402 Week 2 Discussion Topic 1 and Topic 2

IT 402 Week 2 Discussion Topic 1

Analyzing Situations

Pareto Analysis (Research)

Your initial post for this Discussion Board requires online research and the choice of one suitable source. Please view the Unit 1 Reading Resource PDF for information about what constitutes a suitable source. Do not use the textbook or library articles for this discussion; easy access for the rest of the class will facilitate better discussion.

First make sure you have done the unit reading to understand the Pareto (or 80/20) rule. Then search for an online article (not a book) that explains more about Pareto Analysis. Do notchoose Wikipedia, dictionaries/encyclopedias, or articles that simply walk the reader through creating charts: instead, find an article that explains the kinds of steps you might take to gather information and make the data useful.

For your initial post:

·         In your first paragraph, summarize the main points of the article. Do not quote or copy lists; write in your own words. End the summary paragraph with a proper APA in-text citation.

·         In your second paragraph, explain why it is important to look at data in different ways as you analyze business situations.

·         At the end of the post, provide a full APA reference entry.

Subject line instruction: Write a descriptive subject line for your initial post in this Discussion. Do not label it with your name, the unit number, or the unit name; it should be unique and identify the content.

In your responses to others, you could compare your classmates' articles to the one you chose, offer examples of when you imagine this kind of analysis would be useful, or suggest changes/adjustments to the method as described.

IT 402 Week 2 Discussion Topic 2

Porter's Five Forces (Practice)

Make sure you understand Porter's Five Forces as explained in the textbook before beginning this discussion. Then choose one of the following as the basis for your initial post: the latest iPhone, Kindle book reader, PlayStation game system, Quicken financial software, or Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus software. Your choice must come from this list.

In your initial post:

·         Name the item that you chose from the list above as the basis for your analysis.

·         Then explain Porter's Five Forces related to your item choice in a numbered list. Make sure you cover all five threats.

o    Copy the numbered list below

o    Add your assessment of high, medium, or low threat for each

o    Write your reasoning for your assessment in a complete sentence for each

·         Do not do any research for this discussion. Your answers should be based on your current knowledge and critical thinking ability.

1.      New entrants:

2.      Rivalry:

3.      Buyers:

4.      Substitutes:

5.      Suppliers:

Here is a partial example, written as if the item was about a best-selling automobile:

·         New entrants: Low. The economy has had a difficult time sustaining the automobile companies we already have; it would take a large amount of capital to begin a new car manufacturing company.

Subject line instruction: Write a descriptive subject line for your initial post in this Discussion. Do not label it with your name, the unit number, or the unit name; it should be unique and identify the content.

In your responses to others, it is acceptable to disagree with a classmate's assessment, but tact must be employed in your explanation why you do not agree. This is good practice with "soft skills" for Consulting and also will point out that differing opinions are valuable.
